Gaudí's first house

A summer house covered in flowers.

Gaudí was in his twenties when the stockbroker Manuel Vicens asked him for a summer home in Gràcia, then a separate town outside Barcelona. The plans were signed in January 1883 and the house was finished in 1885: brick, stone and ceramic, with Islamic and Mudéjar touches, green and white checkerboard tiles and tiles of yellow flowers the house calls "Moorish carnations". Gaudí said the plot had been covered in them.

In 1925 the second owners doubled the house, with a matching turret by the architect Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez, after Gaudí declined the job. Much of the garden was sold for housing in 1946 and 1963. The bank MoraBanc bought the house in 2014, restored it from 2015 to 2017 and opened it as a museum in November 2017.

Marc was an exceptional guide and the tour was outstanding [...] As one of the earliest Gaudi houses in Barcelona, the style is very different from his other later work - very much worth seeing and learning about the history of this unique house.

Where the story ends

Add the Sagrada Família

Casa Vicens is where Gaudí's career as a house architect began; the Sagrada Família is where it ended, and where he is buried. 2026 is the centenary of his death, and the basilica's tallest tower was blessed on 10 June.

The guide

Casa Vicens, explained

The house where Gaudí became Gaudí, and how to fit it into a day of his Barcelona.

Why people come

Most visitors meet Gaudí on Passeig de Gràcia or at the Sagrada Família. Casa Vicens comes first in the story. It was his first major house, designed when he was in his twenties, and you can see the later buildings starting here: the ceramic, the nature motifs, the roof treated as a place to be rather than a lid. It only opened to the public in November 2017, after more than 130 years as a private home.

It is also a calmer visit. Casa Vicens counted 263,743 visitors in 2025, and the rooms are domestic in scale: a dining room, a smoking room, three bedrooms, an attic and a roof.

A ceiling of coloured plaster shaped like palm fronds with hanging clusters of dates
Casa Vicens' smoking room has a plaster ceiling of palm fronds hung with dates.

On your own or with a guide

The skip-the-line ticket is our pick, with 4.7 from 5,872 reviews: you choose a time slot and walk round at your own pace with the audio guide on your phone. The guided tour costs the same from-price and adds an in-house expert for the symbols and the stories, in a small group, and you can stay on afterwards.

Good to know: Casa Vicens opens every day, Mondays included, from 9am. The last entry is 1 hour 15 minutes before closing, so 6:45pm in summer and 4:45pm from November to February.

Three houses in one walk

Gaudí's houses tell a story when you see them in order. The 3 Gaudí houses tour starts at Casa Vicens and walks down to La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, with one guide and all three admissions included, in about 3 hours. For your own guide, the private Gaudí tour starts at Palau Güell in the Raval and ends at Casa Vicens, with La Pedrera on the way.

La Pedrera, finished in 1912, one metro stop from Fontana.

Park Güell and the rest of Gràcia

Park Güell is about 1 km uphill, so the two make an easy half-day. The Park Güell guided tour has 4.7 from more than 23,000 reviews and lets you stay in the park afterwards. Down in Gràcia, the squares and the Mercat de la Llibertat are good for lunch between the two.
